Police: 1 in custody, 2 on the run after shoe sale turns armed robbery in Lincoln County

LINCOLNTON, North Carolina — Deputies say a Charlotte man has been arrested and two are still wanted in connection with a shoe sale that turned into an armed robbery in November 2021.

Evidence obtained during the investigation led to the identification of three suspects, including Elijah Levi Whitley, 19, N’Kosi La’Darris Michael, 20, and Jefrey Chase McMurray, 19, all of Charlotte, in North Carolina.

Deputies have charged the three men with robbery with a dangerous weapon, criminal conspiracy, misdemeanor assault while pointing a firearm and misdemeanor possession of stolen property for their involvement in the following incident.

On Nov. 17, 2021, deputies say a person and his friend met a group of strangers around 3:30 p.m. after setting up a social media meetup to sell them tennis shoes worth $640.

The reporter told deputies they all met in their cars in a Walmart parking lot on Highway 73 to look at the shoes.

As the person showed the shoes, police said the suspects pulled out handguns with extended magazines and demanded the shoes and money.

As the victim had no cash, the suspects fled shortly after the incident with the shoes in a black Honda.

Deputies arrested McMurray in Charlotte on January 22, 2022, then released him the same day on $25,000 bond.

Deputies are still looking for Whitley and Michael for their involvement in the armed robbery.

Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call Detective Hendrix at 828-455-6762 or the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 704-732-9050.
